Visual Basic Imaging Routines
Microsoft Windows Image Acquisition Library v2.0
Imaging control to replace the Wang/Kodak Image Edit controls

Posted:   Monday February 03, 2003
Updated:   Monday December 26, 2011

Applies to:   VB4-32, VB5, VB6
Developed with:   VB6, VBScript (for included demos)
OS restrictions:   Windows XP; for Windows 2000 see Prerequisites and Comments below
Author:   Microsoft

 Prerequisites
Developed as a XP alternative to the Wang/Kodak controls for Windows XP.

The Microsoft download page for this dll states the "Supported Operating Systems" is Windows XP, and that "Windows Image Acquisition Automation Library v2.0 is only supported on Windows XP with Service Pack 1 installed." The dll relies on GDI+ available under Windows XP. I have also received reports the dll can also be used on Windows 2000 systems, though possibly only those with the latest service packs. Please see the Comments below.

Developers wanting to add image and image device control functionality to their applications will and to check out this new, redistributable dll provided by Microsoft intended to replace functionality introduced with the Wang and Kodak image controls provided in older versions of Windows. Prior to the introduction of Windows XP, the Wang/Kodak control and libraries formed part of the operating system installation (were not redistributable) and provided the only inherent means to offer imaging display and manipulation without relying on third-party controls. However, Kodak Imaging for Windows program and the related controls (ImgScan.ocx, ImgAdmin.ocx, ImgEdit.ocx, and ImgThumb.ocx) are not included with Windows XP.

The readme file indicates the Windows Image Acquisition Library v2.0 is only designed to support the PNG, BMP, JPG, GIF and TIFF image formats. It should not be relied upon to support other formats, though they may appear to be supported depending on system configuration.

The download contains the dll, help files, installation instructions and a rash of assorted VB-based demos (and no, it does not contain the image shown ... that's my desktop background):

Spinrite V6.1: ^new^

SpinRite operates at the physical level of a storage device, independent of the operating system or file system. It is primarily used for:

If a hard drive has begun clicking, or the OS reports cyclic redundancy check (CRC) errors, SpinRite can often recover the unreadable files and stabilize the drive long enough for you to back them up.

technology can often recover the data from damaged sectors where the OS fails.

Instead, SpinRite operates at the sector level . It talks directly to the drive’s controller, bypassing the OS entirely. Its primary functions are:

SpinRite v6.1 is a masterclass in legacy software modernization. Steve Gibson has taken a tool that was on the verge of irrelevance in the SSD era and retooled it for the 2020s. While the price ($89) is steep for a tool most users will run twice a decade, the peace of mind it offers is tangible.

SpinRite v6.1 is a rare bridge between computing’s past and its future. It maintains the simple, no-nonsense interface that fans have loved since the 80s, but hides a high-performance, modern engine under the hood. Whether you are dealing with a clicking mechanical hard drive or a sluggish NVMe SSD, v6.1 is once again the first tool you should reach for in a data emergency.

Let the process run. Thanks to the v6.1 speed optimizations, a process that used to take days can now finish in a matter of hours or minutes depending on drive size. Conclusion

In the pantheon of utility software, few names command the respect—and nostalgia—of . Originally developed by Steven Gibson at Gibson Research Corporation (GRC), SpinRite has been the gold standard for low-level hard drive maintenance, data recovery, and preventative sector repair since the days of MS-DOS. For decades, IT professionals, data recovery specialists, and hardware enthusiasts have kept a bootable SpinRite floppy disk, CD, or USB drive in their toolkit. SpinRite operates at the physical level of a

: SpinRite v6.1 includes optimized read/write operations that allow for faster and more reliable data transfer between the drive and the computer. This optimization reduces the risk of further data loss during the recovery process.

The most apparent upgrade in v6.1 is speed. While v6.0 was bottlenecked by the computer's motherboard BIOS—often limiting data transfer speeds to 10–20 Megabytes per second (MB/s)—v6.1 bypasses the BIOS entirely for modern controllers. It talks directly to the hardware, allowing drives to run at their maximum native speeds. It is common to see performance jumps from 15 MB/s up to 200+ MB/s on spinning platters, and even higher on solid-state media. 2. Native SATA, AHCI, and NVMe Support

With the release of SpinRite v6.1, creator Steve Gibson and Gibson Research Corporation (GRC) have delivered a massive, ground-up rewrite of this legendary utility. This article explores everything you need to know about SpinRite v6.1, its new features, how it handles modern storage media, and how to use it to protect your data. What is SpinRite?

The most significant change in v6.1 is the introduction of for IDE/ATA and SATA/AHCI interfaces. Instead, SpinRite operates at the sector level

Version 6.0 struggled or failed entirely on drives larger than 2 Terabytes (TB) due to 32-bit addressing limitations. Version v6.1 fully embraces large-drive geometry, allowing users to safely test and recover drives up to dozens of terabytes in size without memory crashes or wrap-around errors. 4. Smart Log Analysis and Real-Time Benchmarking

A common question is whether a tool designed in the era of spinning disks is relevant for modern Solid State Drives (SSDs). The answer is a resounding yes, though the utility interacts with them differently. Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)

Instructions for proper installation of the dll and the help files are included in the readme.txt located in the main installation directory. The readme.txt in the samples folder contains the information above. Developers using wiaaut.dll are granted license to freely redistribute the library with their application as detailed in the redist.txt file inside the zip. (Only this dll is listed in this file, so  don't overwrite your VB directory's redist.txt with this file!)

This file is provided by VBnet as a service to developers. Any support issues for this product should not be sent to VBnet.

 Comments
If the file 'gdiplus.dll' is installed on a Windows 2000 machine but not properly registered, calls to wiaaut.dll (the imaging dll) will not work. After registering gdiplus.dll calls to wiaaut should succeed.
